Artist Statement

My work is rooted in human emotion and mental health. I have always struggled with mental health and did my best not to show and express it in fear of being judged or looked down on, something that I have found and related with many people who get the same way. I allow my subjects to express and pose as they feel, and the candidacy makes them feel more natural and relatable to the viewer. Although I tend to mask negative emotions in social settings, I am very open about it when needed. People, in general, have always felt very comfortable talking to me regardless of the relationship with the person, and I want to relay that in my portraiture. I want the viewer to feel like they can connect with a stranger. I structure my photoshoots around the autonomy of my subject’s desire to express and pose naturally. This candid approach brings out a sense of ease and relatability. This process would not work without my own approachability. I invite the viewer to make a connection with my subjects through authenticity.
